Ms. Allison Burke, a Danvers High School senior, has won Newburyport Choral Society’s annual $1000 Betty Gillette Scholarship.   Ms. Burke was chosen because of her exceptional musicianship skills as well as her leadership capabilities.   She is an alto saxophone player, and she is also a proficient on flute and clarinet

Accepted to prestigious music programs such as University of Michigan, Boston University, UMass Amherst, and Ithaca College, Ms. Burke came highly recommended by her private music instructor, Scott Kaplan.

“Allison is a ‘once in a career’ student who has taken every opportunity to prepare herself for the life of a collegiate musician and beyond,” says Kaplan.

“I am honored to receive this scholarship and grateful that the Newburyport Choral Society has chosen me to receive this award,” said Burke.  She will be attending UMass Amherst in Fall 2018 and hopes to become a classical saxophone soloist and ultimately, a college professor of saxophone.

Named for a founding member who sang with the chorus from 1934 to 2009, the Betty Gillette scholarship is awarded annually each spring to a High School senior who is planning to major in music in college.   For more information about the scholarship, go to
