A Joyful NCS Reunion in Song!

Ryan Turner, Music Director, greets singers.

On June 19, 2021, the Newburyport Choral Society rehearsed together—and in person—for the first time in 15 months on the grounds of the Newburyport Elks Lodge. The weather was sunny and balmy, the birds were singing, and the chorus was finally audible to NCS Music Director Ryan Turner as well as to each other after many months of online rehearsing.

There were smiles, laughter, conversations and hugs both before and after the rehearsal. Newly installed NCS President John Moreland welcomed everyone to the event and announced that we would be returning to rehearsing together again in the fall, saying that “the BOD will be doing a lot of planning this summer to make our return as safe and enjoyable as we can.”

For his part, Ryan Turner was ebullient and energetic as he rehearsed us in person for the first time since becoming NCS Music Director in June, 2020.  “I’m seeing many of you for the first time; forgive me if I forget names, but I’ll get there.” Kirsten Helgeland also returned for the event, providing her exquisite accompaniment as usual.

After some fun physical and vocal warm-ups, Ryan led an engaging and lively rehearsal of several of the choral pieces the chorus had been learning virtually for the past two semesters, including:

“How Can I Keep from Singing” (Robert Lowry; arr. Sarah Quartel)

“By the River” (arr. Aaron Copland)

“We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace” (arr. Undine Smith Moore)

Throughout the rehearsal, Ryan was impressed with how responsive and engaged the chorus was. “What I wanted to do today was figure out how we sing together again,” said Ryan. “This event was about fun and making music together. It was such a treat to hear and see everyone, finally!”

Please check back on this website in August for more details about fall singer registration, upcoming concerts, and other events.
