An Important Message from the Newburyport Choral Society

We had a remarkable spring semester, and I sincerely want to thank everyone who was able to come to our Carmina Burana spring concert on May 6th and 7th.

What a fabulous musical journey it was, especially performing with The Boston Camerata! Teaming with this world-class organization was an honor and a privilege for us, and was an experience we will never forget.

This concert was bittersweet as well, since it was the last one under the baton of Music Director Ryan Turner. Earlier this year, Ryan was offered a teaching position at MIT, where he will conduct their two choruses. Ryan has been instrumental to the survival of the Newburyport Choral Society throughout the difficult pandemic period from which we are now emerging. His skill in teaching us vocal techniques and inspiring us to give our best will stay with us forever.

Dr. Minji Kim

After a nation-wide search, NCS is pleased to announce that Dr. Minji Kim will be our new music director beginning in July, 2023. Currently serving as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choirs at Gordon College in Wenham, MA, Dr. Kim holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) in Choral Conducting from the University of Maryland, a Master of Music (MM) in Choral Conducting from The Ohio State University, and a Bachelor of Music (BM) in Composition from Yeungnam University in South Korea.  We are delighted to welcome Dr. Kim to NCS and we are already inspired by her enthusiasm and dedication to our mission.

As we close out this program year, I wanted to again thank everyone for their generous support this year. NCS depends on the generosity of our contributors for nearly 50% of our annual budget. We strive to continue to bring the best live choral music to our community, as well as the best vocal soloists and the best orchestral musicians. It takes a lot of resources to “keep the NCS boat afloat”.

Please consider an end-of-program-year contribution to NCS. Your funds go toward quality music programming for the next program year budget cycle, and toward closing funding gaps for the current year. We hope that you will take a moment to click here to give whatever amount, large or small, that you can.

Have a great summer, and we’ll see you in the fall!
