NCS Announces Its 85th Anniversary Season!

NCS is pleased and proud to celebrate our 85th Anniversary this year! For both our Winter 2019 and Spring 2020 Concerts, we return to the British and European traditions of merging the magnificent sounds of chorus, brass and organ. In addition, our Spring 2020 performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah will feature not only NCS, but professional vocal soloists and an orchestra of 30+ musicians!

Here are the highlights for our 2019 – 2020 concert season:

NCS 2019 Free Summer Sing – Excerpts from Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass

Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church

7 Harris Street, Newburyport, MA

Please join us as we begin celebrating our 85th Anniversary Year with the NCS annual community-wide Summer Sing, a free public event. This year we will perform excerpts from Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass.

Written near the end of Haydn’s life, this work is widely considered to be his greatest achievement. The text, taken from the Catholic Mass, includes lovely renditions of the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei.

NCS Music Director Dr. George Case will conduct both singers and professional vocal soloists, with Dr. Kirsten Helgeland as our piano accompanist. You can sing along with the chorus, or simply enjoy the performance in the beauty of the main sanctuary of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. You will also learn about this great work from comments by Dr. Case.

Refreshments will be served following the performance. Bring your score if you have one. A limited number will be available for the evening at no cost. And bring your friends to this wonderful event!

NCS 2019 Winter Concert – “NCS Christmas with Brass”

Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, December 8, 2019 at 2:30 p.m.

Belleville Congregational Church

300 High Street, Newburyport

Our Winter Concert features Giovanni Gabrieli’s Hodie Christus Natus Est and O Magnum Mysterium, and works by British contemporary composers Mark Rutter and Cecilia McDowell, and contemporary American composer Kevin Siegfried.

The magnificent harmonies of the chorus will be joined with the majestic and regal sounds of brass and organ, representing a musical tradition that traces back six centuries to the Renaissance, and continuing forward through Europe and Great Britain to American contemporary compositions.

And of course, no holiday concert is complete without our favorite carols of the season, our NCS orchestra, and the delightful voices of the Greater Newburyport Children’s Chorus.

NCS 2020 Spring Concert – “Elijah”

Saturday, May 2, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

Sunday, May 3, 2020 at 4:00 p.m.

Belleville Congregational Church

300 High Street, Newburyport

Our Spring 2020 represents the culmination of the 85th Anniversary of NCS. Fittingly, we will perform one of the world’s greatest works from the 19th century, Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah.

Combining biblical stories of the prophet from various books of the Old Testament, the piece features highly dramatic and theatrical passages narrated by accomplished baritone soloist Nicholas Davis, with additional arias by soprano, alto and tenor soloists, and of course, resplendent choral passages performed by NCS.

For this special performance, the NCS orchestra will include a professional orchestra of approximately 30 musicians including strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion.

We hope you will join us for these spectacular performances to celebrate the 85th Anniversary of NCS.
