NCS Announces Online Fall Singer Registration to its First Ever “Virtual Semester” and Its 2020-2021 Music Season!

The NCS Board of Directors is pleased to announce that online singer registration for an exciting Fall semester program will begin on August 14th, kicking off the 2020-2021 season. Watch a short video invitation by Ryan Turn here. Online registration will remain open through September 15th.

Under the leadership of our new Music Director Ryan Turner, NCS is offering a fall season of innovation, collaboration, and inclusion.  The Fall semester’s theme is “Cultivating Choral Foundations” and provides a rare opportunity for singers at any experience level to learn, grow, and be inspired.

Because of the current pandemic situation, all rehearsals will be conducted via Zoom, which means that members will be singing from the privacy and safety of their homes.  (Zoom instructions will be coming soon).

What our Fall Semester Will be like:

Summer 2020 Annual Meeting

The overall goal of the fall semester is to engage singers in understanding and practicing good choral singing techniques and learning about the cultural and artistic background of the pieces we hope to perform at our Spring Concert in May 2021. In addition, we will be bringing in guest experts to address current issues in the music field such as diversity and equity.

Fall rehearsals include the following highlights:

  • Each Tuesday evening, Ryan Turner will teach and demonstrate different aspects of musicianship and vocal preparation. Participants will learn in depth about singing techniques, vocal health, and music theory.
  • Historical, cultural and artistic information will be presented about the major pieces to be performed at the Spring Concert (see below for Spring Concert details).
  • In addition to learning some of the music we hope to perform in the Spring, we will be exploring music we can perform in smaller groups in the community.
  • There will be lectures/discussions by guest composers and artists.

The Spring Semester and The Spring Concert, May 2021

While the future of choral performances is uncertain due to the pandemic, NCS Music Director Ryan Turner has developed a beautiful Spring Concert program that will be culturally relevant and respectful of what our community, and communities around the country have been going through in these challenging times.

Entitled “The Promise of Living, Remembrance and Renewal” the program will include music to help process the loss that has been all around us, and at the same time, hopefully celebrate a sense of renewal and hope for the future.

Major pieces of the Spring Concert will include:

  • Gabriel Fauré                          Requiem, arr. Rutter
  • Gerald Finzi                            My Spirit Sang All Day
  • Undine Smith Moore               We Shall Walk through the Valley
  • Ralph Vaughan Williams         Toward the Unknown Region

Who Should Join Us for the Fall Semester Season?

Everyone with an interest in choral singing is invited to participate in the Fall semester program.

NCS is a non-auditioned chorus and has always accepted members based simply on their desire to sing. This Fall program provides an opportunity for us to come together via Zoom to experience an unusually rich learning opportunity from home.

We look forward to welcoming all current and past NCS members back to the experience of learning together again. And we hope many others will join us, including:

  • Members of other choruses and church choirs
  • High School Music Directors and their students
  • Our NCS family of audience members, sponsors, and advertisers who would like to learn more about the choral singing experience.

And because Fall rehearsals will be online, you don’t even have to live within driving distance to Newburyport!
